September 7, 1858, envelope with corner business marking of sending company, Windle & Company of New York, to London. Letter was prepaid 24-cents (not shown) as indicated by the notation "Paid for 'Canada,'" in the upper right corner, a reference to the desired steamship to carry the letter, a British mail steamship. The letter was included in the mailbags made up on September 7 for the next day sailing of the steamship from Boston, as shown by New York datestamp in upper right corner. A credit of 19-cents to the UK also was in this marking, the correct amount for a single rate letter to be sent on a British mail steamship. The letter was carried by the Cunard steamer "Canada" from Boston (September 8) to Liverpool (September 18).
