The US Postal Service commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the completion of the Alaska Highway with the issue of a 29-cent commemorative stamp in Fairbanks, Alaska, on May 30, 1992. Construction on the 1500-mile Alaska Highway was begun by the US Army Corps of Engineers and other government agencies in March 1942 and completed in November of the same year.
Designed by Byron Birdsall, the stamps were printed in offset/intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and issued in panes of fifty.
