Description:
Steel lock developed by the Eagle Lock Company. The case front was stamped "UNITED STATES MAIL LOCK PAT'D JAN 20 1891" by the manufacturer. Two stars were also incised into the top left corner.
The lock, known as the "eagle" or "double star", was replaced by the embossed Smith-Egge padlock. After the Postal Department created the Mail Equipment Shops, all the old Eagle locks were reworked and put back into service, replacing the Smith-Egge padlocks. The Eagle locks were eventually replaced by the "LA" lock.
