Description:
Silver Century manufactured this rural mailbox, which was designed to be bolted to a fence post and serviced by a postman on horseback. The cylindrical, hip-roofed style is counter-balanced to close automatically after mail is deposited at the top.
This particular mailbox was used by a pioneer family in McLennan County, Texas. In order to display this mailbox in the exhibit "Reaching Rural America," the flag which was on the mailbox when it was donated was changed.
