Description:
CSA 5-cent Jefferson Davis. Unused; issued imperforate. Engraved in relief on steel, electrotyped, and flat-bed printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co., Ltd., London, England. A single subject plate of four hundred divided into four panes was used. Known as the 'London Print' by collectors, the central design is a portrait of the Confederate president engraved by F. Joubert. Due to the increase in the letter rate to ten cents on July 1, 1862, usage is generally seen in pairs. Earliest known use is April 16, 1862.
