Description:
This Gutenberg Bible Issue stamp commemorates the 500th anniversary of the printing of the first book, The Holy Bible, from movable type by Johannes Gutenberg, a German blacksmith, goldsmith and printer. Gutenberg created metal movable-type printing press, the first of its kind to be used in Europe. The stamp features an image of Gutenberg showing a proof of his Bible to Aldoph of Nassau, Elector of Mainz. The image is based off a New Deal Works Progress Administration mural painting by Edward Laning.
