Printed by Archer & Daly, a Richmond, Virginia, company also engaged by the Treasury Department. Frederick Halpin, a former employee of the American Bank Note Company, engraved the stamp of Jefferson Davis, which is printed from a steel plate. The earliest known cancellation is May 1, 1863.
This was the first philatelic object collected by the National Philatelic Collection in 1886. Four of the stamps have been removed.
