Unrivaled in his day as a Democratic Party operative, James Farley "built the Roosevelt bandwagon" and provided much of the political muscle behind Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. After helping Roosevelt win New York's governorship in 1928, he went on to manage FDR's hugely successful 1930 reelection campaign. Farley reprised his role as campaign manager when Roosevelt embarked on his quest for the presidency and was instrumental in securing FDR's nomination at the 1932 Democratic National Convention. Farley himself won election that year as the party's national chairman-a post he held until 1940. Rewarded with the office of postmaster general after Roosevelt's victory in November, Farley used his position to dispense patronage jobs to countless Roosevelt loyalists. He again served as campaign manager when FDR won reelection in 1936, but broke with Roosevelt in 1940 over the president's decision to seek an unprecedented third term.
