Violet Oakley was an accomplished illustrator, portraitist, muralist, industrial designer, and civic leader. In an era when women were rarely invited to create large-scale public art, she rose to fame for a mural commission depicting The Founding of the State of Liberty Spiritual (1902–6) in the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building. The acclaim from this impressive narrative work led to further prominent commissions.
Oakley drew inspiration from the contemporary British Pre-Raphaelite art movement, which favored historical and literary subjects rendered in minute detail and brilliant color. She also advocated for Quaker ideals of equality and pacifism in her political activism, supporting the League of Nations, the United Nations, and Cold War disarmament. Fellow sculptor Robert Tait McKenzie, who was also a University of Pennsylvania professor of physical education, made this relief as a gift for Oakley, inscribing it “from her friend and admirer.”
