A self-taught artist, Josiah Johnson Hawes earned his living as an itinerant painter of portrait miniatures before devoting himself to daguerreotypy in 1841. Two years later, he became a full partner with Albert Sands Southworth in the preeminent Boston daguerreian studio known thereafter as Southworth & Hawes.
This daguerreotype, which remained in the Hawes family for three generations, pictures Josiah Hawes with two of his brothers, both of whom also worked for a time as photographers in Massachusetts. Albert established a studio—Hawes Brothers—in Taunton and Charles operated a photography business in New Bedford.
