A self-proclaimed “disabled oracle,” activist Alice Wong is the founder of the Disability Visibility Project (DVP). The DVP was originally created to collect oral histories ahead of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990). It has since grown into a powerful online community amplifying the voices of people with disabilities. Wong has also hosted a popular podcast and written several works, including her acclaimed 2022 memoir, Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life.
During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riva Lehrer made this drawing of Wong as a study for a portrait. Though part of Lehrer’s Zoom Portraits series, the initial virtual sitting was held over Google Hangouts, to which the inscription refers. Reflecting on the pandemic, Wong wrote, “Vulnerable, ‘highrisk’ people are some of the strongest, most independent, and most resilient people around . . . we know how to show up for each other.”
