Octavia Butler broke new ground as a writer of science fiction. Bringing her unique perspective to a field dominated by white men, she expanded the genre by publishing some of the earliest examples of “Afrofuturism.” Her speculative fiction combines African history and folklore with technological advances and supernatural powers. In 1995, Butler became the first science fiction writer to receive a MacArthur “genius” award. Years after her death, Butler continues to receive attention for the uncanny parallels between her dystopian fictions and our world today.
Bisa Butler (no relation) created this vibrant quilt by carefully layering transparent fabrics. She based Butler’s likeness on a photograph by Alice Arnold. Gazing into space, Octavia Butler appears to glimpse the future. The pattern of Butler’s shirt emphasizes her visionary nature: a flying saucer over her right shoulder and starbursts on her collar.
