Miriam Beerman explored themes of oppression and injustice during an artistic career spanning more than seventy years. “There are some who feel they have to bear witness,” she once remarked, “and I happen to be one of them.” Her expressionistic style conveys a visceral sense of physical and psychological trauma. In 1986, she executed a series of paintings representing the plagues of ancient Egypt. The artist interpreted these events as precursors to the Holocaust and the bombing of Hiroshima, which she referred to as manifestations of “the brutality of our time.”
Beerman was a lifelong printmaker as well as a painter. The woodcut technique, in which the artist uses a chisel to gouge the design out of a wooden block, matches the forceful physicality of Beerman’s painting style. Works such as this self-portrait gain emotional power from rough cuts, flattened space, and simplified lines.
