Born Humacao, Puerto Rico
Marta Casals Istomin has devoted her life to expanding the audience for classical music. Born into a family of amateur musicians, she left Puerto Rico for New York City at age thirteen to study cello. In 1955, she traveled to Prades, France, becoming a pupil of world-renowned cellist Pablo Casals, whom she married. Partly based in Puerto Rico, they founded the Festival Casals for classical music, the island’s symphony orchestra, and the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. For a decade starting in 1980, Casals Istomin—then remarried to pianist Eugene Istomin—was artistic director of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In the nineties, she was appointed president of the Manhattan School of Music.
This portrait is a study for the collaborative artwork Three Stanzas of Love for Soprano, a love song by Pablo Casals for his wife, based on a poem by Tomás Blanco, and illustrated by Lorenzo Homar.
