Acclaimed illustrator and author Ashley Bryan brought much-needed diversity to children’s literature by creating works that introduced young readers to Black characters and folk tales from the African diaspora. Bryan was building a successful career as an artist in the mid-1960s when an article in the Saturday Review drew his attention to the lack of positive representations of people of color in children’s books. To fill this void, Bryan published The Ox of the Wonderful Horns and Other African Folk Tales (1971), the first of many books that would earn him a loyal readership and many prestigious awards.
