Metacom, a Wampanoag leader known to English settlers as King Philip, oversaw a coalition of Indigenous forces during a bloody conflict with New England colonists known as King Philip’s War (1675–76). The fighting broke out following decades of growing tensions over treaty violations regarding territorial rights, land use, and the treatment of Native people in English courts.
This portrait of Metacom, made nearly a century after the leader’s death, was engraved by the famed silversmith and Revolutionary War patriot Paul Revere for a 1772 reprint of Thomas Church’s The Entertaining History of King Philip's War (1716).
