In 1992, the United States Postal Service held a competition to find an image of Elvis for a commemorative stamp. The USPS then chose two images from those submitted and asked Americans to vote for their favorite image of Elvis: the young rocker of the 1950s or the early 1970s-style Las Vegas and concert mega-showman. More than a million votes were counted, and the young Elvis portrait by Mark Stutzman was chosen for the stamp. The Elvis Presley commemorative issue was released on January 8, 1993-what would have been Elvis's fifty-eighth birthday-and became the most popular stamp of all time, with a printing of 500 million.
