The same could have been said for Whitey Ford in the 1950s and 1960s, when he was the Yankees’ go-to guy on the mound. “He was the greatest pitcher I ever saw,” said Yankees manager Ralph Houk. “He had a pitch for every situation and every hitter.” Ford broke Ruth’s forty-three-year record in 1961 and won the Cy Young Award. The next year he extended his scoreless streak to 33 2/3 innings in game one of the World Series.
