Ruth’s private life was complicated at best. He never had a stable family life as a child, and as an adult the constant train travel demanded of professional baseball players inevitably strained his marriage. Moreover, given Ruth’s zest for living big, he developed a litany of vices—in all shapes and forms—such as tobacco, alcohol, gambling, and womanizing. Reporters played by the rules of the day and did not pry into his private life. Still, news was news. In September 1922, when Ruth’s wife, Helen, suddenly appeared with a sixteen-month-old baby, the press asked some obvious questions. The Ruths both claimed that the child, named Dorothy, was theirs, but could not agree on her place or date of birth. Only in adulthood did Dorothy learn that her real mother was a family friend, who had remained close to Babe Ruth until his death in 1948.
