Mounted Baleen and Sperm Whale Skeletons - Compiled by T.W. French - Last updated 2012: Georgia Museum of Natural History, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia - The Marine Science Program plans to exhibit the skeleton of a baby Northern Right Whale that washed ashore on Little St. Simmons Island, GA in December 1981. It was originally on display at the Savannah Science Museum, Savannah, GA, in 1994 when the museum opened an exhibit called “Endangered Giants of the Georgia Coast”. The discovery of this dead baby Right Whale helped initiate the effort to define the area of the Southeastern U.S. Right Whale calving grounds. The skeleton was transferred to the University of Georgia about 1997.
