504404 Globicephala macrorhynchus 378 cm female – JGM 174 Tursiops truncatus, JGM 175 USNM 504405 28 May 1976 Received a call from Delaware Marine Resources that a small whale had been found dead last night at the Getty Oil Refinery piers on the Delaware River at Delaware City, Delaware. Called there and got information that it was a medium sized pilot whale. CWP and I headed out in the Ford, arriving about 15:30. Went down to the pier and found an adult female Globicephala macrorhynchus (JGM 174). Loaded it on the truck and took it to the sanitary landfill immediately north of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, where we worked it up. Specimen was very fresh, no evident cause of death – heavy Stenurus infestation in middle ears and pterygoid sinuses – worms still alive and very active. Collected only teeth, flippers, worms, gonads, mammary, and histpath. Received a call from Shirly, while at the dump, that a dolphin had been found dead at Lynnhaven, VA (near Virginia Beach). Finished the pothead at 18:15 and headed for Norfolk. Called Shirley and ascertained that the dolphin had been taken to VIMS by Bob Huggett and that it was still in the cooler along with a turtle which Zug wanted. Spent the night at George Reiger's. 29 May 1976 Left Reiger's about 07:00, picked up an immature Tursiops (JGM 175, USNM 504405) from VIMS at 10:00, headed back to D.C., arrived at 13:30 and put everything in the freezer.
