Observed for 5 or 6 weeks before end of december 1883; mortally wounded by harpoon 1 Jan 84; carcass observed off bervie, west coast of kincardinshore, towed into stonehaven harbor 8 Jan 84. skeleton to aberdeen. tl 40' 0". the famous tay whale - "twas in the month of december, and in the year 1883,that a monster whale came to Dundee, resolved for a few days to sport and play, and devour the small fishes in the silvery tay."
