The referenced paper (Moore and Evans, 1967) says that the Makaopuhi lava lake is 1600 feet wide and 225 feet thick. It is overlain by 50 feet of younger lava flows. The field collector number is the depth or distance from the top (in feet) of the sample (minus the 50 feet of overlain new material). MP-121 = 71 feet from the top
