mussel was dissected and a piece of the visceral mass including digestive gland was fixed in 10% phosphate buffered formaldehyde, dehydrated in an increasing ethanol gradient, cleared with Microclearing, embedded in paraffin wax, sectioned at 5 um and stained with Harris' hematoxylin and eosin
