Preparation:
Alcohol (Ethanol)
Remarks:
Fix: 10% formalin
Place:
Green Canyon, Block 140, Louisiana, United States, North Atlantic Ocean
Collection Date:
27 Sep 2008
Notes:
Specimen has a label indicating 10% formalin. The fluid smelled like ethanol with a note of formalin - I suspect the specimen may have been swapped into ethanol already but without a rinse. Swapped to fresh 70% ethanol on 27 June 2025 with an intermediary step of 40% ethanol for 1 hr.
The field number LII-08-SV6-B1 is shared by USNM 1478061 and 1478062. They were assigned unique USNM numbers on the basis of Marshall Boyd's inventory numbers but it is likely they are different fragments of the same coral colony. On 2 July 2025, black coral specialist Jeremy Horowitz confirmed they are the same taxon but could not piece the colony back together with 100% certainty so they have retained separate USNM numbers.
