In arena humida ad stagna pluvialia prope pagum Cordofanum, Abu-Gerad, Sudan, Africa
Collection Date:
24 Sep 1839
Notes:
Specimen labeled as Cyperus retusus Nees. The name Cyperus retusus Nees was validated by Steudel in 1842 (Flora 25: 582) based on Schimper 1199 (apparently also Sieber s.n. from Mauritius, and a Kotschy specimen not cited by number). Krauss (1845) gives the name Cyperus hochstetteri to the Schimper 1199 and Kotschy 52 specimens he believed were wrongly identified as C. retusus Nees. (Is this name properly validated by a description?? if not, validated later by Steudel) Steudel later cites (1854, p. 11) lists Cyperus retusus Nees citing only a Sieber collection from Mauritius and recognizes C. hochstetteri Krauss for the Schimper and Kotschy specimens. Cyperus retusus Nees was later cited by A. Rich. in 1850, based on Schimper & Quartin Dillon specimens from "Abyssinia" (no Kotschy collections cited). Making no reference to Steudel, this name may be an isonym. The name Cyperus hochstetteri Nees ex Krauss (with C. retusus Nees ex A. Rich. in synonymy) was accepted by Baker (1882, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 20: 282).
