Notes:
Woven buriti mat folded in half with the loose ends of short sides twisted together into thick tassels and cut evenly. Tassels are linked together with a cord which contiues up one side where it once wrapped around the shaft of a red and blue feather. A cord is tied through the opening. Also loose are two, short lengths of cane made into whistles by using resin in the sound holes. Dr. Newton says this is a falcon hat with duct flute. Hat used by seller in his role as huk (Gavaio/falcon) in a ceremonial group of the wu?tu ceremony held in Pukobye in early 1970s. The distinctive social history of this particular hat stems from the movement of the maker and the user/seller between Krikati and Pukobye villages, and the fact that the user/owner brought it with him to his wife's village. Obtained from Juvenal, a 29 y/o male who is married to a Krikati. Made by Kwikwa, a 31 y/o male who was born Krikati, but moved to the Pukobye where he married a PUK woman. Because he was recorded in both places in 1964, he has a PUK id as well as a KRI. Juvenal made the field number 200 b + c whistle replacements for the orignals which were damaged and discarded. Used. Missing cordage around the base of braided fringe which is marked by pale line on frond. Duct flutes are unused, and possibly non-functional substitutes for the missing orignals. Hat has bug damage to detached feathers. Duct flutes, both incomplete, missing wrapped cord. Also field number 200c, resin baffle lost. Hat: buriti frond interlaced, macaw feather. Duct flutes: mure (see musical instruments field number 31; reed, resin/wax , original duct flute would have been attached to hat and was missing at the time of purchase. These 2 duct flutes were substituted, but do not have the embellishment that the orignal probably had (e.g. like 1968- 397 and 400. ) Price paid was 15 crs.
