Ash rake ("ape-kiray") used to level ashes in the hearth, is made of carved wood with wood shavings threaded through handle. Pair of fire tongs ("ape-pasuy") made of two sticks tied together with rope, used to manipulate hearth fire. According to Chisato Dubreuil, the hearth is used for cooking and heating, and is also the location of daily prayers and the residence of the household protector deity, "ape-fuchi". Almost all ceremonies begin with the "ape-fuchi". Exhibit prop made for the 1999 NMNH exhibit "Ainu: Spirit of a Northern People".
