Notes:
Provenience undocumented. Mid 16th to 17th century dates based on chronology for Benin bronzes established by William Fagg and Philip Dark. Identification provided by Hirshhorn Museum (HMSG). Description: rectangular plaque has raised frontal view of male figure. Has stylized features of large eyes, wide nose, and full lips. Wears smooth cap with long tassels, knee-length skirt decorated with multitude of straps and buckles. Right arm is bent at elbow holding unidentified item. Left hand extends forward at right angle, holding upright weapon. Plaque is secured by twill tape to wooden base with upright plank. Exhibited in NMNH "African Voices" 1999 - present.
From African Voices exhibit: "In battle, bells that cover this war chief's leather tunic announce his location to his troops."
