Notes:
FROM CARD: "ILLUS. IN BAE 3RD AR, PL. XXIX, FIG. 75, P. 203." Provenience note: though listed on the catalogue card as from Unalaska Island, the BAE 3rd AR reference cited on the catalogue card identifies this as an Aleutian mortuary mask from Unga Island, Shumagin Islands. On p. 140 of the BAE 3rd AR, Dall describes this mask and indicates that it was from a cave near the entrance to Delarof Harbor, Unga Island. He also indicates E7604 and A13002 are from the same cave.
Large mask, wood and ocher, 17th or 18th century, Unga Island, Shumagin Islands, Alaska.
Illus. Fig. 92, p. 84 in Black, Lydia. 2003. Aleut art = Unangam aguqaadangin. Virginia Beach, VA: Donning Co. Publishers. Identified there: "This is a mask collected ca. 1868-69 by Dr. T.T. Minor. Originally identified erroneously as a death mask coming from Unalaska. It was recatalogued, based on opinion by [William Healey] Dall, as coming from Unga, Shumagin Island. This mask has a tooth grip and thus was used by a participant in a rite."
