Source of the information below: Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center Alaska Native Collections: Sharing Knowledge website, by Aron Crowell, entry on this artifact https://alaska.si.edu/record.asp?id=579 , retrieved 7-17-2018: Charm. This tiny walrus ivory charm is carved in the shape of a fox or dog, and may have given spiritual protection to its owner or luck in hunting. When at sea in their skin boats, Siberian Yupik hunters carried charm bundles containing ivory or wooden carvings of whales, seals, bears, foxes, or dogs, for protection against the sea's dangers.
