Collector's notes, written on tag attached to object: Rukai (Paiwan group) tribe. Wu-tai village, Wu-tai township, Pingtung County (Hsien), Taiwan (Formosa). Goatskin shoulder pouch; Chinese: bei bau. Said to be used for carrying nuts, tobacco, and so on at ceremonial occasions. Made of mountain goat skin, Chinese: shan yang pi. Although completely traditional in material and construction, this example made in 1963. The former owner, Lai Jye-hao, is said to have belonged to the 2nd group of the Rukai middle caste, and was 55 years old.
