Collector's notes, written on tag attached to object: Paiwan tribe, Pingtung Hsien, Raisha to Rikirikisha (village) area, Taiwan (SW Formosa). Mourning cape. Worn during customary mourning periods. Indigo-dyed blue ramie base with interwoven red wool stripes, with snakeskin and flame embroidered design crossbands. As usual, such capes are constructed of three pieces of cloth in the customary loom width, which are stitched together to make a square or rectangle. Probably late 19th to early 20th century.
