From card: "Dark blue silk robe, embellished with over all couching of braided silk and embroidery of metallic gilt thread in symbolic design. Rectangular, with armhole openings in side seams. Open at front with stole-like panels passed over neck and hanging down front with dark blue plain panels at either side. Dating probably from the K'ang Hsi [Kangxi] period, 1662-1722 A. D., of the Ch'ing [Qing] Dynasty, 1644-1912. See figs. 39, 40, in "Chinese Textiles", The Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., 1934, for similar section of border design showing Ch'ilin [Ch'i-lin or Qilin], dragon-carp, and sacred pagoda motives. A rare and valuable specimen. Bought as a "Tao [Daoist] Priest Robe by donor in Shanghai in 1918 for $500.00."
