Notes:
This painted hide was acquired directly from Washakie by William C. Brown in 1898-1899 while he was commandant at Fort Washakie, together with an explanation of the 11 scenes. All events are reported to be scenes of Washakie's life, with 10 scenes of war deeds and 1 of a buffalo hunt. The buffalo hunt vignette appears to be in a different hand and may have been added by one of his sons. Washakie produced several such works for sale, at times collaborating with one of his sons. There is a photograph of a different hide with detailed explanation in the NAA (MS 2209) dated 1897. Transcription of key in accession file: 1.
