From card: "The uppers of these moccasins are beaded in openwork floral design. A tag says: "These moccasins belong to Houston Charley and were given him as a bribe to stop working for the United States Government."
Speculatively, there was a Southern Ute man named Buckskin Charley/Charlie, a.k.a. Sapiah. He succeeded Chief Ouray in 1880, becoming the first Ute leader during the reservation period. There was also a non-Native American man, Charles White (1846 - 1923), called Buckskin Charley/Charlie, who was a beekeeper, translator, blacksmith, and scout, originally from Ohio, who went west to Nebraska circa 1865 and later Colorado. White was listed as an interpreter at the Devils Lake (now Spirit Lake) Dakota Reservation, North Dakota, in the Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs 1892, 1893, 1894. https://nebraskahistory.pastperfectonline.com/byperson?keyword=White, Charles, 1846-1923, retrieved 10-28-2021.
