CARD FOR 336865 ONLY LISTS ONE INNER AND ONE OUTER SHIELD COVER, BOTH OF WHICH ARE ACCOUNTED FOR. HOWEVER, THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL OUTER COVER NUMBERED 336865, IN OLD HANDWRITING. THIS COVER LOOKS LIKE IT COULD GO WITH 336866, BUT CARD FOR 336866 DOES NOT MENTION A PLAIN OUTER COVER. FOR NOW, ARTIFACT HAS BEEN KEPT AS 336865. - F. PICKERING 4-9-1996
George Levi and Max Bear of the Cheyenne delegation from the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma made these comments during the Recovering Voices Community Research Visit November 3-6, 2015. The feathers on this could include bald eagle, hawk, and possibly road runner. The cover is unpainted but was patched for more use rather than replaced. George noted that the cover is as important as the shield and is made with ceremony so the two are a match.
This is a version of the design recorded by James Mooney as the Rib Shield (see In Sun's Likeness, P. Powell, 2013, pp. vol.1, 134-137.
