WHITE BARK CLOTH WITH REDDISH-BROWN DESIGN RUBBED ON FROM "UPETI" DESIGN BOARD. THE DESIGN IS EMBELLISHED BY PAINTED DARK BROWN TRIANGLES AND LARGE DOTS. THERE ARE ALSO DARK BROWN LINES AND Y'S ON THE BROAD WHITE BORDER. EXAMINED AND SAMPLED BY KENNETH P. EMORY, BISHOP MUSEUM, JUNE 1941. HAS ORIGINAL PEALE TAG.
FROM CARD: "MR. K. P. EMORY, BISHOP MUSEUM, GAVE INFORMATION BELOW, 6/24/41: TAPA, TYPICAL, 'UPETI DESIGN. SAMOA. MR. EMORY TOOK VERY SMALL SAMPLE 6/24/41."
Rectangular piece of slightly coarse bark cloth with a decorated surface. On the top side reddish brown design patterns cover the surface, except on the unembellished borders along the width and one narrow border on the length. The last border was previously cut. Designs: In brown: triangle and "butterfly" shapes drawn in squares. All the squares are linked to each other. Round shapes with sometimes unpainted circle in the middle. They appear to be hand painted. The paint layer is thick and shiny. In reddish brown: Finer patterns with different shapes and small parallel lines. Those patterns are clearly visible on the back side. The thickness of the bark cloth consists of two main layers. Sometimes three are noticeable, especially on the previously cut edge. The tapa is of varying thickness and is undulating and uneven. The bark cloth is coarser where the brown patterns were heavily applied.
