PROVENIENCE NOTE: THE CARD CATALOG GIVES "PAPEAR CREEK, MONTANA" FOR PROVENIENCE. NO SUCH CREEK IS TO BE FOUND IN STATE REFERENCES. THIS MAY WELL BE A MIS-TRANSCRIPTION OF "POPLAR CREEK"; THERE WAS AN INDIAN AGENCY BY THAT NAME, OPENED IN 1880, ON FORT PECK RESERVATION. THE AGENCY SITE SUBSEQUENTLY GREW INTO A TOWN, ITS NAME SHORTENED IN 1892 TO "POPLAR," NOW IN THE JURISDICTION OF ROOSEVELT COUNTY.
