Notes:
Catalog numbers 19388 and 19389 are a type of mat that is very important to the Samoans. In a letter by Steinberger (the donor) in accession file, he talks about how they are the most valuable objects a Samoan can possess and wars are fought over them. Also when a chief's daughter is born a mat is placed in her dowry, which is then the most valuable part of her dowry.
