From card: "This rug may have been included with silk rug, cat. No. 14,159 in "rug bale" included with gifts first offered to the then Pres. Martin Van Buren, and on his refusal to accept, to the Gov't of the United States in 1840; transferred from the U.S. Patent Office to the U.S. Treasury in 1858; to the S.I. in 1887. See, also, Cat. Nos. 14,160-14,165 Kashmir shawls 3 in Crafts and Industries [NMAH] and 3 ethnology; also pearls; diamonds and gold, in Dept of Geology-- all included in same gift. Two Arabian horses included with the imaum's gift were sold in New York at auction for $993.28. Other animals, a lion and a lioness, when last heard from were quartered in a room of the American consulate in Tangier. Mr. Carr, the American consul, felt that he had been imposed upon."
