FROM CARD: "MARRIAGE." [This comment crossed out by Chang-Su Houchins, Curator for Asian Ethnology, in 2001. She says Daimyo processions are seen in many varied occasions, not only marriages.]
Accession Card: "Collection of small figurines representing the procession of Daimio in Old Japan. From K. Samo's Exhibit at the World's Columbian Exposition [Chicago World's Fair of 1893].-- O. Mason"
Set of 64 painted miniature clay dolls or fushimi-ningyo; 43 are broken, with some loose unassociated parts, ranging in size from 5.4 to 18.5 cm.. Set was intended to depict annual procession/journey of local Daimyo (feudal lord) to Edo (Tokyo). Erroneously published in Perry Collection catalogue (it is not a Perry piece), "Artifacts of Diplomacy" Smithsonian Collections from Commodore Matthew Perry's Japan Expedition (1853-1854)" by Chang-su Houchins, Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology No. 37, 1995, entry # 124, p. 128.
