Illustrated Fig. 4.28, p. 72 in Cowdrey, Mike, Ned Martin, Jody Martin, Nakia Williamson, Paul M. Raczka, and Winfield Coleman. 2012. Horses & bridles of the American Indians. Nicasio, Calif: Hawk Hill Press. Identified there as Nez Perce woman's headstall, 1860s; wool and muslin cloth, cotton seam binding, glass seed beads, silk ribbon, conical brass tacks, brass hawk bells. Women's headstalls of this structural type were described as early as 1831 by Capt. Benjamin Bonneville. By 1900, both sexes used this style, with a wide brow band and triangular brow pendant.
