FROM CARD (this text is taken from a 19th or early 20th century exhibit label; for original label see card E11276): "COILED BASKET BOWLS OF THE UTE INDIANS (SHOSHONEAN STOCK). MADE FROM SPLIT WILLOW, COILED OVER BUNCHES OF SMALL TWIGS. IN SOME EXAMPLES THE WORK IS DONE CARELESSLY, THE FILAMENTS PIERCING AND DIVIDING THE STITCHES OF THE PRECEDING COIL; IN OTHERS, THE SEWING IS SO CAREFULLY LAID ON THAT IT PRESENTS A UNIFORM SURFACE AND IN NO CASE DOES ONE STITCH INTERFERE WITH ANOTHER.
