The accession file contains a memo from Woodruff to the AMM: " The redstone pipes (of which one incomplete and two finished specimens are sent) are made by the Sioux Indians from the stone which is found from southern Minnesota as far south as the 49th parallel, several specimens having been brought in my members of the British N. A. Boundary Commission from the regions south of Fort Buford."
