FROM CARD: "ILLUS. IN USNM AR, 1889; PL. 91, FIG. 2; P. 589."
Ledger book entry and writing on the scraper says "F.V. Hayden" and "J. Stevenson", implying that Hayden collected it, perhaps during the 1871 expedition? Then Stevenson acquired it from Hayden (when?) and donated or transferred it to the Museum.
The Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 explored the region of northwestern Wyoming that later became Yellowstone National Park in 1872, and included Montana as part of the survey route. The survey was led by geologist Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden. James Stevenson was a member of this expedition (he worked for Hayden from 1866 - 1879.)This object was presumably collected by Hayden or Stevenson on the 1871 expedition, since it was catalogued into the Smithsonian collections in early 1872.
