From card: "Reddish clay. Rounded bottom. Troy IIc-IV. cf Blegen Troy I 2 fig 129 shape A45; figs 381, 2, Troy I 1, p 230, 209; Schliemann, Ilios 299ff "Depas Amphikypellon" as named by Schliemann. Usually wheel made. Schliemann's name a misnomer as he mistook it for the Homeric 2-handled cup which is of course much later than this. Shape A45 is introduced in Troy II c and is most characteristic of the Trojan EBA shape. Parallel examples are known from Orchomenos, Syros, Boz Höyük, Gordion, Kültepe, Alisar [Alisar Höyük]. The shape probably originates at Troy and was imported to or imitated at other sites (cf Bittel Kleinasiatische Studien Istanbul, 1942, 132-135). The type ranges from Troy II c thru Troy III, IV, and possibly V (no examples Troy V found in Blegen's excavations, only some possible examples from Schliemann's). Usually the bottom is pointed or rounded and cannot stand by itself. Schliemann, Illios, 371, concludes "therefore, whoever held such a goblet in his hand, when filled with liquid, was forced to empty it before putting it down. In this way the goblet was always kept clean." Exhibit, Hall 26, 1976." 1978 NMNH slide set caption: Ceramic goblet, red, two handles, rounded bottom, repaired, Trojan.
