Notes:
1/3 - Length of shawl fringe material bound along one edge, "Pacific Blue" color; purchased from McKee's Indian Store, 116 W. Main St., Anadarko, Oklahoma. 2/3 - Sample card from McKee's Indian Store, with examples of different colors of fringe used for shawls. 3/3 - 2012 price list for McKee's Indian Store.
These items were collected as samples to illustrate the materials with which shawl makers work. The material used for the fringe on most shawls is called chainette. The sample card shows the colors available and the length of material bound along one edge shows what a yard looks like as purchased. They were purchased in March 2012 by Michael Jordan at McKee's Indian Store, 116 W. Main St., Anadarko, Oklahoma. McKee's is an old Anadarko institution, selling craft supplies and purchasing and retailing selected Indian goods. It more recently opened a display space next door The Susan Peters Gallery, where they sell materials considered fine art, primarily original paintings and prints. Shawls are machine hemmed on all four sides and may be variously decorated, but the fringe is inserted by hand and hand tied to hold it in place, either with a single knot or “double tied” with adjacent fringes also tied together to create a netted effect. Fringing a shawl represents a major investment of labor and relatives may be called upon to assist when a family is assembling materials in preparation for a giveaway.
