L-1446 (Shriver Chert)
Shriver Chert is also known as Bedford, Bedford County, Bedford County Black, Eliberry, Mahantango, Old Port, Penns Creek, or Troxelville. It is black (N2), black with dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) shading along exterior edges that may be oxide film, white, or dark gray to black. Black (N2) & brown (7.5YR 3/2) varieties become very dark gray (N3) & dark brown (7.5YR 4/2) when heated at 450 degrees C. When weathered it becomes a yellow-gray that is described in West Virginia as "cherty siltstone". May have spiriferid brachiopod inclusions. Dull luster and medium texture. Translucent to opaque. Deposits include beds and lenses of deeply weathered chert, sandstone, and conglomerate.
Location remarks: Outcrops approx. one-quarter mile west of the Dove site, South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River, Hardy Co., WV; Crest and east slope of ridge along Rte. 101 in Middle Smithfield Township, Monroe Co., PA; South-side of Brodhead Creek along Rte. 80, Smithfield Township, Monroe Co., PA; Exposed along the upper 6 feet of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike; Exposed in the upper 3 feet of the Alliance Sand Company quarry immediately North of Palmerton, PA; Penns Creek outcrop, Snyder Co., PA; Hyndman, Londonderry Township, Bedford Co., PA; Cameron County, PA at 5913-5922 feet below surface; Cover Bridge Road, Osterberg, Bedford Co., PA. per Tim Jackson, Tyrone, PA (04/20/04)
