L-1239 (Mt. Independence Chert)
Mt. Independence Chert, also known as Clarendon Springs, is a blue, blue-black banded, or light to dark blue chert. When weathered iron staining is present. It has white linear quartz lines and iron pyrite crystals. It has a coarse to very fine texture. Deposits include tabular, bedded outcrops, and talus.
Geology remarks: Epoch- Ordovician, Group- Beekmantown, Form- Clarendon Springs
Location remarks: Outcrops on the Mt. Independence massif and on small bedrock exposures on the adjacent Vermont and New York shores; Collected samples on the southeast side of Mt. Independence, Orwell Township, Addison Co., VT 1989; Northwestern Vermont.
Archaeology remarks: Swanton Site, VtFr-1; East Creek Site, VtAd-12; cultivated fields at the slope base are littered with workshop debitage.
